How They Came To Be:
Before Columbus discovered North America the eastern part of it was made up of deciduous forest. As Europeans moved into North America they deforested the area and started to kill the wolves which were seen as pests. As the wolf population decreased coyotes moved in and took over the habitats that previously belonged to the wolves. By the time the coyotes moved in to Algonquin Park the wolf population was so depleted that they saw their enemy as a potential mate and started to mate with them. This led to the birth of the Coywolf.
Physiological and Behavior Differences Between the Coywolf and its Relatives:
Coywolves are smaller than a wolf but are larger than a coyote. They also have intermediate sized ears; snout and nose pad. They have a thick coat, long legs and a bushy tail which gives them a wolf like appearance. Unlike wolves who hunt large prey in packs coywolves prefer to hunt small prey alone or in pairs. Additionally, coywolves are more adaptable than wolves are able to live in small habitats near humans.Wolves on the other hand need a large habitat that is as far away from humans as possible. Furthermore, coywolves are less afraid of humans compared to coyotes and are more likely to approach them.
